The speaker will describe how the SCONUL (Standing Conference of National and University Libraries) "7 pillars" model of Information Literacy has been used in the design and delivery of an Information Literacy class. The class is a compulsory level one module for students taking the BSc Information Management at Sheffield University. The module is delivered using labs, lectures and WebCT, and includes group work and student presentations in class. A key aim of the class is for students to start to develop their own conception of information literacy and become aware of areas of weakness and strength. The major piece of coursework for the students is an individual report in which they have to describe their achievements and experience in relation to each of the SCONUL seven pillars, and produce evidence to back up their descriptions (including the output of an individual search they carried out for a fellow student, and a group PowerPoint presentation describing the results of a search). The speaker will discuss course design, and how the model has been used in learning, teaching and assessment, including some examples from student work.
