Integrating Library Services and Instruction into Electronically-Delivered Courses

Paper: 1/2 hour

Convergence & Continuity

There is a need for all students to learn to do research in order to develop life-long learning skills. In most educational settings this need is met by bringing students in to the library for a session in using the library and its resources, including electronic databases and indexes. However, when a class is taught totally online, another way of accommodating this need must be developed utilizing electronic means, rather than having the students come to the library for instruction, since they may reside anywhere in the world.

The presentation describes a model for providing information literacy instruction and library services to online distance learning students, using as an example procedures developed at the University of North Texas. Strategies and tools for providing these services will be described and discussed.

As a result of the session, audience members should be able to plan and implement their own program for integrating library services into Distance Learning courses, using or adapting some or all of the methods described.
