Web-based database tutorials at GCU library

Demonstration: 35 minutes

Empowerment, Enhancement, Enrichment

I would like to give a short demonstration of part of our GCU library web-based information skills course. I would like to show our interactive database tutorial which aims to teach students the basics of searching the CINAHL database. It evolved from a paper "work-through guide". We chose an online version as we had 400 nurses (who use CINAHL) to train in one week and only one staff member available to do it! The department suggested a video guide, but we felt that students would not take the information in unless required to actually type in the search commands "live". The course is available for off campus users 24-7 and can be worked through as many times as required. We hope that this will provide access to a tutorial when the student needs it. It can also be used as a guide for Medline as that database uses the same interface. Many of our health students have used this course, Nurses, Midwives, Physiotherapists, Podiatrists, Radiographers, Vision scientists and some Biomedical Scientists. The course uses split screen format, with live session in the top screen and the step-by-step instructions in the bottom one. I hope to highlight the advantages and some of the disadvantages in using this type of tutorial. I will need an internet connection and a projector screen that can be used with a PC. The course format has been adapted to show Cambridge Scientific Abstracts, Science Citation Index and Recal. The specific course is available at http://www.lib.gcal.ac.uk/library/health/
The relevant passwords are required for full access (Athens or Recal).
