Over the last ten years there has been rapid and radical change in the social and educational environment with the development of the "information society". Information now plays a vital part in the lives of people and organizations. Information literacy is the key to the optimum use of information.
During this time the Government has been concerned to improve educational standards, widen participation in education and facilitate lifelong learning. Although the use of ICT in higher education is well established, in further education it is a recent innovation. While some research has been carried out in higher education as to the value of ICT in the development of information literacy, little research, as yet, has been carried out in further education.
The purpose of my current research is to study the value of ICT provision and use in the development of information literacy in students in FE
A case study approach is being adopted within a number of selected institutions using a variety of data collection methods. The focus is on 'A' level students as they are moving from a mainly "taught" curriculum to one that may require a more independent use of information.
It is proposed that this conference demonstration will provide information on the research to date. It will also raise significant questions for discussion by delegates. An outline of the research findings would be followed by a general discussion on the importance of information literacy in FE students, how this may be developed and who should be responsible for this development.
